I-95 Through Rhode Island

Interstate 95 is the backbone of Rhode Island's highway system and one of the busiest highways in New England. The road runs north-south through the full length of the state — roughly 43 miles from the Massachusetts state line near Attleboro in the north to the Connecticut state line near Westerly in the south.

For a small state, Rhode Island has an outsized share of I-95 congestion problems. The primary reason is the convergence of major interstate highways in Providence: I-95, I-195, and I-295 all meet within a five-mile radius, creating one of the more complex highway junctions in the northeast. Add to this the heavily urbanized corridor through Providence, Cranston, and Warwick, and you have a recipe for routine congestion during peak hours and significant delays when incidents occur.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) operates an extensive camera network along the full I-95 corridor. These cameras provide live video feeds that are publicly available and form the backbone of the I-95 section of the StateCams.com map. With cameras positioned at regular intervals from Exit 2 (Route 3, Woonsocket) in the north to the Connecticut border in the south, there is rarely a significant gap in coverage.

I-95 Rhode Island: Key Segments

Northern Rhode Island (Attleboro to Providence): Exits 28–17

The northern section of I-95 through Rhode Island is a relatively straightforward four-lane interstate that transitions quickly from the Massachusetts suburbs into the Rhode Island suburban communities of North Attleborough and Pawtucket. Traffic in this segment is predominantly commuter-driven, flowing toward Providence in the morning and away in the afternoon.

The most significant congestion point in this segment is the Pawtucket area, particularly around the I-95/I-195 northside connection and the Pawtucket-Providence city line. The elevated highway sections through downtown Pawtucket are narrow by modern highway standards, and incidents here rapidly back up traffic southward toward Providence. Providence (Exits 17–21): The Bottleneck

The five-mile stretch of I-95 through downtown Providence is the most congestion-prone section of highway in Rhode Island. Three factors combine here: the urban geometry forces the highway into elevated sections with limited shoulders; the I-95/I-195 interchange feeds heavy east-west traffic onto an already loaded north-south corridor; and high exit density (eight exits in five miles) creates constant weave conflicts.

Camera coverage in the Providence corridor is the densest on the entire I-95 Rhode Island stretch. During peak hours, checking these cameras gives a comprehensive picture of whether Providence is flowing or locked up: I-95 @ Broadway · 6/10 interchange · I-95/I-195 split.

Cranston and Warwick (Exits 15–9): The Airport Corridor

South of Providence, I-95 passes through Cranston and into Warwick, where T.F. Green International Airport is located. Airport traffic is a consistent congestion contributor at Exit 13 (Post Road) and Exit 12 (Airport Connector). This section widens to six lanes through most of Warwick and generally carries well except during airport peak departure hours and during major accidents. The I-95 @ Jefferson Blvd camera covers the Warwick corridor well.

Southern Rhode Island (Exits 9–1): Into Connecticut

The southern section of I-95 from Warwick to the Connecticut border passes through Coventry, West Greenwich, Hopkinton, and Westerly. This is a largely rural corridor with significantly lighter traffic than the Providence metro area. The primary congestion risk here is during summer weekends when beach traffic from Connecticut and Massachusetts flows north into Rhode Island, and on the return southbound Sunday evening when that same traffic reverses direction.

Camera coverage is thinner in this section, but the strategic exits — particularly around the RI/CT state line — are covered. The I-95 @ CT state line camera is the best early indicator of backup conditions approaching from Connecticut. The cameras here are most useful in winter when the more rural landscape and lower treatment priority can result in more significant ice accumulation than in the urban sections to the north.

Key I-95 RI congestion windows: Northbound peak: 7:00–9:00 AM weekdays. Southbound peak: 4:30–6:30 PM weekdays. Summer Fridays outbound and Sunday evenings inbound can be severely congested throughout the state.
