Providence sits at the geographic and infrastructural center of Rhode Island. The three major interstates — I-95, I-195, and I-295 — all converge in or near the city, making the Providence metro area the busiest traffic zone in the state and one of the more complex highway junctions in all of New England.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) maintains a dense network of traffic cameras throughout the metro area, with particular concentration around the downtown interchanges, the Route 10 connector, and the I-95 corridor from the Massachusetts border south through Cranston and Warwick. These cameras feed live video to RIDOT's traffic operations center and are also publicly available — exactly the feeds you'll find on the StateCams.com map.
For commuters traveling into or through Providence during the morning and evening rush hours, the camera network provides a genuine decision-making advantage: you can see, in real time, whether I-95 is already congested before you leave home, and make an informed choice about timing or routing.
Providence Traffic Hotspots
Certain locations in the Providence metro area consistently generate the most congestion and are the most-watched cameras on the StateCams.com map:
The I-95 / I-195 Interchange
The junction where I-95 and I-195 meet in downtown Providence is the single most congested point in Rhode Island. Northbound I-95 traffic merging with I-195 east-west traffic creates bottleneck conditions during both morning and evening rush hours on weekdays. A single fender bender here can back traffic up to the Cranston city line within 10 minutes. The RIDOT camera coverage of this interchange is among the best in the state — there are multiple angle views giving good situational awareness. View the I-95/I-195 split camera →
I-95 Through Downtown Providence
The section of I-95 that runs through the core of Providence — roughly from Exit 18 (Thurbers Avenue) to Exit 23 (Eddy Street/Wickenden) — is elevated and surrounded by development on both sides, leaving little margin for breakdowns or incidents. This stretch is heavily monitored and consistently appears in the top-viewed cameras during rush hour. The I-95 @ Broadway / 6-10 interchange camera gives the best single-point view of Providence through-traffic.
Route 10 Connector
Route 10 connects I-95 in Cranston with downtown Providence and I-195, acting as an inner-city bypass for drivers heading from the western suburbs into the city. It's a significant commuter corridor that backs up severely during peak hours. The Route 10 @ Union Ave camera and Route 10 @ Reservoir Ave camera are especially useful for gauging downtown access conditions.
I-295 North (Lincoln / Smithfield)
The northern leg of I-295 through Lincoln and Smithfield carries heavy commuter traffic from northern Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. The segment near Exit 9 (Route 116 / Smithfield) is a known pinch point where merging traffic from Route 146 can create significant slowing during peak hours.

When to Check Providence Traffic Cameras
- Before a weekday commute: The I-95 cameras between the Massachusetts border and Exit 15 (Plainfield Pike) give a 15-mile preview of conditions heading into the city. If you see heavy congestion at Exit 18, consider Route 10 or a surface-street alternate.
- During Providence sports events: Games at Dunkin' Donuts Center and events at Amica Mutual Pavilion both generate significant post-event traffic on I-95 south and the downtown surface streets. Camera checks 30 minutes before event end give you an early read.
- Winter storms: I-95 in Providence is generally treated quickly during snowstorms, but the elevated sections through downtown can ice over faster than at-grade portions. The downtown cameras are your best real-time indicator of road surface conditions before the city officially issues travel advisories.
- Construction season: The Providence area sees more ongoing highway construction activity than any other part of Rhode Island. Lane reductions, especially on I-95 between Exits 18 and 23, frequently occur overnight and into early morning. The cameras show active lane configurations better than any navigation app.
